Is spanking ever acceptable as a punishment?

I don’t agree with spanking with the exception if the kid did something horrible that really crossed the line. I think instead to tell them in a firm voice what they did wrong, why it was wrong then provide a consequence like bed without dinner etc. if you make a threat like “If you don’t stop I’ll turn this car around” and actually follow through. They will behave.
But, if you spank for every wrongdoing it just teaches them to do whatever they have to do to avoid another spanking. To hide things from you, to tell lies etc. not good.
